Plast was founded on the basis of British scouting, adapted to Ukrainian realities.
Plast did not “become scouting later.” It was built on the same foundation from the very beginning.
In the early 20th century, a new approach to youth development emerged — Baden-Powell’s scouting. Its ideas quickly reached Ukraine.
So what did Plast’s founders do? They didn’t invent something parallel.
They built on scouting:
- “Scouting for Boys” was read and translated by Oleksandr Tysovskyi (co-founder of Plast)
- they adopted the method — learning by doing, the patrol system, life in nature, service
- and combined it with Ukrainian history, culture, and tradition
That’s how Plast was founded in 1912 — a Ukrainian form of the same global scouting movement
