Why is it important for us to preserve the uniform in its traditional form? - Plast

From the very beginning, its founders — Oleksander Tysovskyi, Ivan Chmola, and Petro Franko — consciously aligned the organization with the global Scout Movement, while giving it a clear Ukrainian character.

Khaki or beige shirt, scarf, insignia, and belt developed gradually, but already before the First World War a recognizable Plast Scout uniform had taken shape.

Despite repeated bans of Plast — in interwar Poland, in the Soviet Union, and during the Nazi occupation — the uniform was preserved in exile, particularly in Canada, the United States, Australia, and Europe.

It was there that the uniform was “kept intact” and later brought back to Ukraine after the country regained independence.

It’s important because:

1. A visible symbol of Plast’s resilience
Plast was repeatedly outlawed, dismantled, and forced underground — yet the uniform survived it all.
It became a clear sign: we exist, we existed, and we will continue to exist.

2. Resistance to short-lived fashion
The world is constantly changing; trends come and go. The Plast uniform does not chase fashion — and that is precisely its strength. There are values more important than contemporary design: honour, service, and responsibility.

3. A marker of identity
For Ukrainians, especially in the diaspora, Plast uniform has long been — and remains — a quiet but unmistakable statement: “I am Ukrainian”, even at times when saying this openly was dangerous.

Plast Scouts preserve the uniform not out of conservatism, but from an understanding that tradition is not a museum piece; it is the transmission of meaning.

Changes do occur (in cut, materials, and details), but the core remains — because it works.
